The low voltage problem persisted despite the arcing sparkplug repair. The problem had degraded to consistently not charging the battery. Being the brave people we are, we opted to install a rebuild kit into the old alternator instead of just replacing it. This almost backfired on us!!! Let me remind you that it is raining in the Yukon today, so we did get wet on the motorcycle parts run. Greg actually had the old alternator on his back in a knapsack, when we left for the auto parts store we didn't exactly know what alternator we had in the Winnebaigis (there are four to choose from, so we figured bringing the old part along isn't a bad idea). After bouncing to two auto parts stores we settled on just getting a rebuild kit for out alternator instead of replacing it... odds are it was just the internal voltage regulator (this was a part in the rebuild kit). One scary moment was upon installation of the rebuilt alternator the engine didn't start... a pin in the starter rely bent and caused that problem. The second problem was discovered after we had the engine started, the alternator was still not putting out voltage... After a quick call to Pete Grieff the "world's greatest mechanic", we realized the problem. As I was talking to Pete, Greg says to me, "Joe did you pull the pin for the brushes?" My responses was "oops, I don't think so". So the call to Pete was not really necessary if I had pulled a stupid pin that would allow the brushes to contact properly. Anyway the alternator seems to be functioning properly. Yet another day spent sight seeing under the hood of the winnebaigis! Hmmm... Greg are you sure they call this thing an alternator... I can't remember which way it goes back together!!! A look at all the old parts we replaced... Natasha these are in the parts bag for you!!! :-) So far there aren't to many parts to send!!! LOL |
